    Provisional: Star Trek RPG Data

Post  GA Zaarin on Wed Jul 22, 2015 5:34 pm

So, Wesley and I were recently discussing getting our online RPG going again, and we were discussing various topics. I was originally opposed to trying Star Trek as not sufficiently action-based--but I've reconsidered my position. I think we could actually have a pretty interesting RPG set during the Dominion War, with the characters forming the crew of a Federation starship patroling the border of the Badlands and Dominion territory. It would be set in 2375, the final year of the Dominion War, circa the opening of DS9 season 7 (and also Star Trek: Insurrection). You guys interested?

The ship would be a prototype Federation warship: https://trekazoid.files.wordpress.com/2014/05/tempest001.jpg
    Bridge: http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/gallery/bridges/equinox-bridge.jpg

These would be the ship's uniforms, with the usual color scheme (red command, gold operations/security, teal science/medical): http://zaarin1.deviantart.com/art/New-Uniform-Concept-548234199?ga_submit_new=10%253A1437608840
(To clarify: the skirted version of the uniform isn't tied to division.)

I'd rather like to do character development sort of collaboratively so that A) everyone gets a role they're interested in, and B) we get a crew that is collectively interesting and not bland like TNG's. For starters, the captain is an NPC and Bajoran. Two other noteworthy NPCs will be a Federation journalist and a Romulan subcommander in charge of the ship's cloaking device (on loan, like the Defiant's, as part of the new treaty with the Romulans [see "In the Pale Moonlight"]). Any positions not filled will either be filled with NPCs or "Ensign Presley." Razz The roles are:
    [*]first officer
[*]chief of security (in charge of shipboard security and probably away missions)
[*]tactical officer (in charge of the ship's weapon systems and strategic coordination with the fleet and DS9--cf. Worf's role aboard DS9)
    [*]chief engineer
    [*]chief science officer
    [*]chief medical officer
[*]communications specialist (more linguist/code-breaker than "space secretary" like Uhura)

A second officer will be selected from these roles. Other bridge crew who are not senior staff (unless selected as second officer, like Data) would be operations officer (essentially in charge of administrating day-to-day operations of the ship, like personnel management and supplies) and helm. If you want to play a civilian, we could probably arrange something--but this is a warship, not the Enterprise. Wink My intention is no ship's counselor, but if you really want to walk around in pajamas and state the obvious, well, who am I to stop you? Razz

As for species, I'd prefer Federation or neutral species; no Klingons, Cardassians, Romulans, Ferengi, etc. Also no Vulcans; I think Tuvok is a prime example of why a full Vulcan should *never* be a main character. Since Data is unique, also no androids. Also no Betazoids or even half Betazoids. If you play a joined Trill, please be aware of the symbiont's previous hosts; unjoined Trill also welcome. Following the precedents set by all the major shows, a human majority would be preferable. As stated before, the captain is Bajoran, and I'd be open to more Bajoran crew members who are certainly not uncommon in the Federation (cf. Ro Laren and Sito Jaxa).

The RPG will start with the crew on DS9 prior to embarking on the starship, which is newly commissioned and a prototype. Consequently, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have some idea of where your character served previously, though I don't need a full service record. We can work out a rank appropriate for your role, which should be commander for first officer and a minumum of lieutenant commander if you're interested in being second officer. Lieutenant, junior grade should be the minimum rank for a senior officer, but operations or helm could be ensign or even an NCO like O'Brien. If you're interested in playing a "lower decks" character, that could *possibly* be worked out as well, as long as you don't feel left out when you're not invited to staff meetings. Wink

That's about it. Let me know if you're interested.

Sounds fun, though I'm more versed in TOS, so I'll have to read up on the times and all.

I'd be interested in one of the last 3, Chief of Science, Med, or Communications.

@Tzlil, if you'd like I'd be happy to give you a rundown of the events leading up to the Dominion War, or Memory Alpha is an excellent source. Smile Or I can highly recommend watching DS9, but that may take some time. Wink

Also, in terms of "stats" or "rules," I figured we'd go freeform--if something needs arbitration we can either attempt to establish a consensus or go with random number generation, especially now that our forum software has a built in dice roller aptly named after a first rate Garak* episode. Very Happy

*Yes, I will absolutely find some excuse to bring in Garak at some point. You can count on it. Wink

Seethray has expressed interest in security and tactical.
Tzlil has expressed interest in science, medicine, and comm.

Another update, two of our slots have been filled. Moff will be playing our first officer, and Tzlil has taken the role of comm officer.

Plenty of fine roles remain, so remember, bid high and bid often. tongue
